258 // Marco Sönke

We proudly receive on our mixtape series Marco Sönke, an acclaimed Frankfurt hero who has been fighting the good fight for almost 30 years. Respect!

Marco Sönke has been a part of the German house music scene for almost 30 years. During this time, he played at countless major clubs and events all over Germany, ran a record label, hosted radio shows, and created and promoted events. He was resident at some of Frankfurt’s finest clubs like Funkadelic, Cooky’s, King Kamehameha and world-famous Cocoon Club, where he played along some of the biggest names in the club scene.

Internationally he played in Switzerland, France, Croatia’s Umagination festival, Wales, Austria and Pacha Ibiza. As a DJ and booker, he was involved in the programme at Cocoon Club Frankfurt where he played along with David Guetta, Afrojack, Fedde Le Grand, Oliver $, Axwell, Zedd, and Laidback Luke. He also played for brands like Adidas, Audi, Baccardi, Daimler, Gaulois, Mini and Volkswagen, and hosted the popular parties at the IAA car trade show in Frankfurt for manufacturer Smart.

He co-ran the Brickhouse label having released more than 50 releases from acts like Trentemøller, Switch, Boris Dlugosch, Steve Angello and Joachim Garraud. They had several club hits, like the Beatport No. 1’s “It‘s Yours” by Jon Cutler and Sharon Philips’ “Want 2 / Need 2 (Trentemøller Remix)”.

As a graphic designer, he created the look for clubs, events, and record covers. He‘s a regular radio host for the Planet Radio Nightwax show and was a graphic designer and co-editor of the Frankfurt nightlife magazine PUR. And he was an active part at Envy, one of Frankfurt’s most successful event agencies.

His sound is heavily influenced by old school funk & soul and the early ’90s New York Garage House Sound. He likes to combine different genres in his sets, ranging from deep, funky, electronic, melodic, and always a bit ruff & dirty. His sets are versatile and technically high-graded.

After 30 years and over 1.500 club sets, he can be considered a respected local hero. Since the pressure of delivering every weekend is off, music and playing occasionally have become more enjoyable. He got back to play straight Funky House Music and US Garage, just like when he started in the early ’90s, so the circle is closing.
