803 // Jeff Johnson – Laced

From the depths of the cracks in Fort Worth's concrete fundament, Jeff Johnson's long-awaited debut on Pan-Am Tracks emerges, featuring four Detroit-style Deep House gems.

Texas producer Jeff Johnson makes a compelling arrival on Pan-Am Tracks with his debut EP, “Forward Function,” a four-track collection that showcases not only his broad understanding of Deep House’s nuances but also significant technical skill in crafting immersive atmospheres. The EP moves with a confident pulse, balancing rhythmic drive with rich textural elements that invite sustained listening. Each piece contributes to a cohesive journey, marking Johnson as a talent with a clear vision for his sound.

Premiered here, “Laced,” the chosen one, masterfully demonstrates Jeff’s approach. It unfolds with a distinctive, undulating bass pattern that provides both propulsion and depth. Layered above this foundation, warm, expansive pads create waves of feeling, while intricate synth sequences add complexity and movement. The overall effect is one of sophisticated, enveloping Deep House, where each element – the driving low end, the atmospheric chords, and the interwoven melodic details – contributes to a richly satisfying whole. Its evocative qualities subtly nod to the emotive currents found in the classic Mr. Fingers’ “Can You Feel It,” yet “Laced” possesses its own distinct character and contemporary polish.

You can find (and buy) this and other music pearls on the Bandcamp page of the label.
