A speakeasy was a clandestine, illicit bar or club that operated during the Prohibition era in the United States (1920-1933), secretly selling alcoholic beverages to a thirsty public. The evocative term originates from the practice of patrons having to speak quietly or “easily” about such locations to avoid detection, often needing a whispered password to gain entry past guarded doors.
This spirit of underground culture is revived in “Speakeasy,” a track featured on Laddie’s upcoming “Lost” EP, set for release on the Argentinian imprint GFS Records. This five-track package marks a deliberate and exciting expansion of the label’s sound palette, driving further into House music territories while meticulously maintaining the distinctive GFS aesthetic. The EP features three original productions from Laddie, complemented by two passionate remixes crafted by Play Boy Joe and the duo Lucas Escarioni & Ludmila Di Pasquale, promising a vibrant and diverse listening/dancing experience.
But let’s get back to “Speakeasy,” shall we? The track is an electrifying, upbeat, 145-BPM peak-time entity, built on a foundation of deep, dreamy pads that create a hypnotic, almost hazy atmosphere. This atmospheric warmth is sharply contrasted by a dynamic, percussive drive – crisp hi-hats, shuffled snares, and propulsive rhythmic elements that launch the energy forward relentlessly. It’s this powerful fusion – the ethereal soundscape meeting a driving, physical groove – that truly captures the dual spirit of its name: the shadowy allure of a hidden world, paired with the irresistible, pounding heart of the dance floor.
