Premiere

013 // Jon Dasilva – Mancunian Sway

We were asked to premiere one of the tracks from the latest release of Sir Jon Dasilva (FAC 51 The Hacienda) on the vital British label Sprechen. Honoured!

Jon Dasilva has probably a lot of interesting stories to tell from the time he was a resident DJ at the historical and remarkable club Fac 51 The Haçienda, in Manchester, and it was hard to resist the temptation of asking him to share a couple of accounts. Fortunately, we managed to focus on the reason why we got in touch with this living legend: His forthcoming release on the vital British label Sprechen.

The track we chose to premiere – Mancunian Sway – sounds fresh and modern despite the clearly 90’s-rave-influenced introduction. However, a very curious fact about this tune, and actually all the others from this EP, is that it was made almost 10 years ago when Mr. Dasilva moved to Stockholm in 2010. Another curiosity: They saw the daylight in the year Jon left Sweden. “It is strange, but true”, said Jon. And he adds: “I am a little ashamed it took 9 years for these little vignettes to find any real life”. We felt even more honoured in premiering one of these tracks after such a compelling anecdote.

Regarding its title, another captivating story: “For those not familiar with Manchester, the Mancunian Way is a kind of a bridge across the city that has gained somewhat of an iconic status in some circles. The Mancunian Sway is the attitude Mancunians have on the dancefloor”, said Dasilva. And in paying a tribute to his hometown, Jon put a lot of emotion into this particular tune. You can hear how excited he was while playing the resolving notes after the break, hitting the mod wheel… it is like if he were reviving special moments from the past, from the magic nights he had 30 years ago, when he was a younger House Music lover, a simpler time before becoming such an iconic artist.

Mancunian Sway is House, Disco, Acid and Techno. Mancunian Sway is Manchester. Mancunian Sway is Madchester in its pure essence. Special thanks to the Sprechen crew for taking the lid off such a masterpiece!

You can find (and buy) this and other music pearls on the Bandcamp page of the label.
